Adult Acne – Control Stress and Control Acne

Many people report fresh acne outbreaks in times of stress. While there has been some debate over the years as to whether acne and stress are related, recent studies have indicated there is a connection. Stress gets your hormones racing. This causes an imbalance of hormones in your body, particularly male hormones, which results in more acne. Some stress is unavoidable – it is simply a part of life. The key is to find a way to control the stress in your life. Each person has to find their own ways to relieve stress but there are some proven methods.

Relaxation Exercises

Practise Yoga-type exercise: learn to calm your mind by calming your body. In the beginning you may have to find a quiet spot to practise. If you cannot find somewhere quiet at least try to be alone. Slow your breathing and breathe deeply from your stomach. Relax your body muscles one by one – start with your legs and feet and work your way up to your face. Imagine there is a feeling of warmth and comfort gradually spreading though your body. Maybe it is in the form of a gentle light that is travelling around your body. When you finally get to your head and face, imagine the feeling entering you mind. Let the feeling flow though your mind.

Visualize Your Special Place

Picture a peaceful scene where there is no one else but you – you are the only one who has access to that place. Put all the things in the picture that make you feel good, make you feel relaxed. When I do this, I like to imagine my mind as a lake where the water is rough and choppy. Then I see it calmed into a still, smooth surface. As I do, I feel the tension leave me. I see and hear wild ducks landing or taking off. I hear the call of other birds; I smell the fresh country air. I see a mirror image of the sky and the trees on the opposite bank reflected on the still surface. It is a picture of tranquility and serenity.

You can do these exercises anywhere – on a train, on a bus or at your desk. After a while you will not have to be alone, as you will learn to slow you breathing and relax you body regardless of distractions. Of course, being alone helps because you can then fully relax and visit your special place. This is a good way to prepare yourself for sleep and a good way to get back to sleep if you are tossing and turning.

As you get into the habit of calming your mind by calming your body, the stress aggravating you adult acne will lessen and so will the flare-ups.
